Paint the Sun: A Boy’s Journey is a serial podcast about my father’s life, and my life as a teenager when he developed brain cancer and passed away in 1999. Blending historical non-fiction with memoir, it tells the story of Joel Kursel, the son of immigrants in a Western Pennsylvania cement town, a basketball star, a WWII pilot, an ad man and the father of seven boys. In telling Joel’s deeply American story, I confront topics such as grief, adolescence, memory and the subjectivity of truth.
